The Bodegas Faustino Winery in Oyón, Rioja Alavesa, recently celebrated the opening of its stunning new extension, designed by the esteemed architectural firm Foster + Partners. Commissioned by the fourth generation of the Martínez Zabala family, this project embodies a commitment to sustainability and enhances the winery's functionality and visitor experience. The new design integrates seamlessly with the existing facilities, presenting a fresh identity while maintaining a strong connection to the region’s winemaking heritage.
At the heart of this extension is a new visitor center designed as a ‘Planet 1.0’ building. This innovative structure not only emphasizes sustainability but also serves as a social focal point for the winery. The design features a vaulted and column-free hall, inspired by the winery’s industrial heritage. The lightweight timber arches create a spacious, flexible environment, allowing for a variety of activities and events. The earthy color palette of the building helps it blend harmoniously with the picturesque vineyard landscape, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the winery's offerings.
The architectural design reflects Foster + Partners’ ethos of sustainability, incorporating an Energy Plus strategy through the installation of photovoltaic panels. These panels generate more energy than the building requires, allowing excess energy to support the existing winery operations. Additionally, the extensive use of natural materials and biophilic design elements fosters a welcoming atmosphere, enhancing the wellbeing of both visitors and employees.
This extension represents a significant evolution for Bodegas Faustino, reinforcing the commitment of the Martínez Zabala family to innovate and adapt to the future of winemaking. The landscaping surrounding the new visitor center has been thoughtfully designed to enhance biodiversity, incorporating local species that support the ecosystem. With these enhancements, the winery not only preserves its operational efficiency but also secures its position as a forward-thinking leader in the industry.
