Casa Calvet, designed by Antoni Gaudí between 1898 and 1900, is in the Eixample district of Barcelona. Built for a textile manufacturer, it served as both a commercial property and a residence. Unlike many of Gaudí’s more unconventional works, Casa Calvet is known for its symmetry and balanced design, likely due to its location in an elegant part of the city and its position between existing buildings.
While more traditional in appearance, Casa Calvet still features Gaudí’s signature modernist touches, such as the curved double gable and intricate details. The columns at the entrance resemble stacked bobbins, referencing the textile industry, while mushrooms above the central oriel allude to the owner's hobby. Decorative elements, including wrought iron and stone motifs, represent symbols like the Catalan coat of arms, a cypress, and an olive tree.
Notably, three sculpted heads atop the building represent the owner’s father and two patron saints of Vilassar, the owner’s hometown. Casa Calvet won the Arts Building Annual Award in 1900, alongside other modernist works like Casa Lleó Morera.
