Colònia Güell: Gaudí's Unfinished Church

12 Oct 2024

Colònia Güell, located in Santa Coloma de Cervelló near Barcelona, was a workers' colony where Antoni Gaudí was commissioned in 1898 to design a church for local laborers. Although the church was never fully completed due to financial issues, the crypt, which Gaudí did finish, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Gaudí used the crypt to experiment with architectural techniques that later influenced his work on the Sagrada Familia. Made of brick and mosaics, the crypt features unique forms and
carefully chosen materials, creating dynamic spaces both inside and out. The roof, which represents the plan of the unbuilt church, contrasts with the flowing forms below, blending
seamlessly into the landscape. Colònia Güell reflects Gaudí’s signature style of integrating architecture with nature.
