Situated on the remote Sagi Island in Japan, NOT A HOTEL Setouchi by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) stands as a harmonious blend of Japanese tradition and Scandinavian minimalism. Envisioned as an exclusive luxury retreat, the resort features three distinct villas, each designed to resonate with the surrounding landscape's natural contours. With a commitment to preserving the island's unique environment, the villas incorporate local materials and traditional Japanese architectural elements, such as rammed earth walls and slate floors. The design underscores a deep respect for nature, ensuring the villas seamlessly integrate with the environment while offering panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea.
The project's architectural philosophy draws inspiration from the longstanding relationship between Scandinavian and Japanese design, focusing on simplicity, natural materials, and a profound connection to the natural world. The villas, named '360,' '270,' and '180,' reflect their respective panoramic views and location on the island, creating intimate yet expansive spaces that invite guests to immerse themselves in the tranquility of Sagi Island. The combination of Japanese craftsmanship with Danish design sensibilities makes NOT A HOTEL Setouchi a unique example of cross-cultural architectural innovation, offering a serene escape that honors both tradition and modernity.
