Makkah Royal Clock Tower: The Tallest Building in Saudi Arabia

14 Oct 2024

The Makkah Royal Clock Tower, part of the Abraj Al-Bait complex, stands as the tallest structure in Saudi Arabia at 601 meters (1,971 feet). Completed in 2012, this architectural
marvel was designed by SL Rasch GmbH and Dar Al-Handasah Architects, featuring a Postmodern New Classical style that aligns with the region's urban fabric.

The tower boasts the world's largest clock face, measuring 43 meters in diameter, and is adorned with intricate Arabic calligraphy, illuminated by two million LED lights visible from 17 kilometers away. At its pinnacle sits a 75-foot crescent moon made of carbon fiber, making it a striking element of the skyline.

Construction of the Abraj Al-Bait complex was not without controversy, as it involved the demolition of the historic Ajyad Fortress. The mixed-use complex includes luxury hotels,
residential spaces, and a shopping mall, catering to the millions of visitors to the nearby Masjid al-Haram. The design features a five-story high shopping center and an Islamic Museum, along with a large prayer room accommodating over 10,000 worshippers.

The tower also emphasizes sustainability, featuring 233 solar panels and advanced lightning protection systems. With 120 floors and an impressive array of amenities, the Makkah Royal Clock Tower is not just an architectural landmark but also a pivotal hub for the growing number of residents and pilgrims in Mecca.
