FARM and Nice Projects have transformed a 1969 modernist school building in Singapore into New Bahru, a vibrant lifestyle hub. Located in the cosmopolitan River Valley neighborhood, the redevelopment preserves the building’s “modern tropical” architecture while introducing new spaces for dining, wellness, and culture. FARM’s approach was minimalist, focusing on maintaining the original charm of the building, while making subtle, impactful changes to elevate the space.
The project’s most significant transformation was the addition of a new central lawn and playground where part of the former car park once stood. This green space, framed by existing rain trees, has become the focal point of the development. The layout was redesigned to improve traffic flow and create a new heart for the building, enhancing the sense of community within the River Valley area.
The exterior of New Bahru retains the original breeze block facade but has been painted in a warm pink tone to modernize the appearance. Steel and aluminum accents were incorporated to contrast the aged concrete, merging the old with the new. The building’s branding is reflected in bold colors and playful design elements, adding character and a sense of fun to the space.
Inside, the design studio Nice Projects collaborated with local entrepreneurs and creatives to design each tenant's space, allowing them the freedom to infuse their unique styles. The interior design is meant to reflect the building’s past while making it feel refreshed for its new purpose, in line with the idea that “new ideas need old buildings,” as famously stated by Jane Jacobs.
