Palau Güell: A Mansion of Grandeur

12 Oct 2024

Palau guel is a mansion designed by Antoni Gaudí for industrialist Eusebi Güell, built between 1886 and 1888. Located in Barcelona's El Raval neighborhood, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to Gaudí’s works.

The mansion features a grand central room used for hosting high society gatherings. Guests arrived in carriages through iron gates with intricate seaweed-like designs. A ramp led to the basement stables for horses, while guests ascended to the ornate reception area. The main hall's tall ceiling had hidden windows for discreet viewing by the homeowners and holes at the top for lanterns, creating a starlit effect at night.

After extensive renovations due to structural issues, the building reopened in 2011. Palau Güell was also featured in the 1975 film The Passenger by Michelangelo Antonioni.
