Sagrada Família . The construction of the Sagrada Família, a monumental basilica in Barcelona, began in 1882 and is still ongoing, with a projected completion in 2026. Designed by
Antoni Gaudí, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most visited landmarks in the world. Gaudí took over the project in 1883, reimagining its original Gothic design with
groundbreaking architectural innovations.
Gaudí introduced angled columns and hyperboloidal vaults to eliminate the need for external supports, allowing the structure to appear more fluid and organic. The basilica’s complex
geometric forms—hyperboloids, helicoids, and parabolas—enhance its visual appeal and acoustics, while also ensuring the building’s structural integrity.
Symbolism is central to Gaudí’s design. The Sagrada Família features three facades—Nativity, Passion, and Glory—each representing aspects of the Christian faith. The intricate Nativity facade contrasts with the angular, stark Passion facade. Inside, the central nave rises to 45 meters, its columns branching out like trees, creating a canopy effect, with light streaming through colored Venetian glass.
When completed, the basilica will have 18 towers, including a central tower symbolizing Christ, which will stand 172 meters tall. Despite setbacks, such as damage during the Spanish Civil War, modern technologies like 3D printing and digital design tools are helping to bring Gaudí’s vision to life.
Gaudí once said, "I will grow old, but others will come after me" acknowledging that the project would span generations. Today, it continues to be a symbol of architectural innovation and spiritual devotion.
