A Taste of Japan in Bahrain: Sumosan Restaurant by Bishop Design

On October 9th, 2024, Bahrain welcomed the much-anticipated Japanese restaurant, Sumosan. Known for its innovative Asian cuisine that has captivated diners from Moscow to Dubai, this new venue marks Sumosan's fourth location in the Middle East and its ninth globally. Designed by Bishop Design, the restaurant is located within the luxurious Address Beach Resort Marassi Al Bahrain in Manama.

Bishop Design has successfully brought the essence of traditional Japanese craftsmanship into the contemporary setting of Sumosan. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by towering wooden columns that create a grand entrance, setting the tone for the rest of the dining experience. The design integrates Sumosan's signature green hues with organic textures of wood and stone, enhanced by gleaming metallic accents.

The restaurant features intricately carved wooden doors leading into an intimate bar area. Here, sculptural timber panels form the ceiling, complemented by metallic wall finishes that reflect light beautifully, creating a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere. The undulating ceiling design, combined with glowing back-bar niches, fosters a sense of connection between the space and its guests, blending comfort with elegance.

The lighting, designed in collaboration with Into and supplied by Lumen Arts Bahrain, plays a significant role in enhancing the ambiance. Oversized lantern shades, inspired by traditional Asian designs, hang above, their soft textures diffusing warm, mellow light throughout the venue. Architectural lighting accentuates the rich wooden textures and bold vertical elements, celebrating the craftsmanship and detailing that is evident throughout the restaurant.

Sumosan in Bahrain stands as a testament to Bishop Design’s ability to merge traditional aesthetics with modern luxury. The restaurant not only offers a culinary experience but also provides a visually captivating environment that reflects the essence of Japanese culture.
